Please Help Raise the Refugee Quota
Currently, the refugee quota in New Zealand is 750 refugees per year. It is increasing to 1000 in July 2018, as part of an agreement New Zealand has with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Refugees are displaced people who have been forced to cross national boundaries because of a conflict in their country of origin. They cannot return home safely and need somewhere to live. In 2011, there were approximately 26.4 million people displaced from the country they are from. 80% of refugees are hosted by developing countries meaning millions face poor living conditions and struggle to survive daily. New Zealand is a developed country with an extremely low population density at 17.9 people per square Kilometer (46.4 per square mile). Refugees continue to struggle in 2018 and this is a massive issue which we believe New Zealand can create much more positive change around through increasing the refugee quota, utilizing our many resources, space, and outstanding living conditions to provide homes for struggling refugees.
The current policy around refugees in New Zealand is a quota of 750 refugee places each year. Our group would like to spread awareness of the issue and raise interest in changing the policy to double New Zealand’s refugee quota from 1000 per year (July 2018) to 2000 per year.
Please sign this petition to help us raise awareness of increasing the quota from 1000 per year to 2000 refugees per year in NZ.
