Governor Newsom finally listened and granted the renewal postponement we demanded. It should never have been this hard to get basic relief while in-person classes were forced to shut down. Keep your eyes on the board because we are done letting them ignore the reality of our profession.

The California Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA) is requesting Governor Newsom to execute a postponement on our state license renewal during the COVID-19 crisis. Governor Newsom’s “stay-at-home”order has ceased multiple in-person continuing education courses a registered dental hygienist (RDH) is required to take such as the mandated Basic Life Support (BLS). With his executed statewide order that has produced financial hardships for many RDHs, and the unavailable means to obtain necessary continuing education units (CEUs) for renewal, it is imperative that our renewals be postponed, allowing us sufficient time to acquire necessary CEUs once the “stay at home” order has been lifted.

I am a state board Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) and a proud California resident. Apart from dentists, RDHs are healthcare providers with a discipline in dental hygiene. In order for us to maintain our licensure with the Dental Hygiene Board of California (DHBC), we are required to complete a minimum of 25 units of continuing education courses (CEUs) during a two year period. These CEUs include: 2 units of mandatory infection control, 2 units of mandatory California dental practice act, and 4 units of basic life support (an in-person ONLY course). Our hygienists rely on these courses put on by our 26 local components and the California Dental Association (CDA) every year. Due to our current conditions of COVID-19, local components have cancelled future CEUs and CDA has cancelled their annual session that normally offers a weekend-full of courses.
Your “Stay-at-Home” order released days ago specifies that gatherings be postponed or cancelled, including conferences. I am writing to you in hopes that you mandate a postponement for license renewals for registered dental hygienists to our Dental Hygiene Board of California, granting us more time to complete our renewal requirements, and allowing us to maintain our licenses through this crisis.

Governor Newsom is ignoring the fact that his own stay at home order makes it impossible for us to fulfill these state license requirements. I am currently hounding the Governor's office for a direct response so do not stop putting pressure on these bureaucrats.

Please Help! At this time paying the necessary fees for re licensure has become a financial hardship for most of us. Two of my places of employment have closed. The necessary requirement for Basic life support/CPR skills Is required IN PERSON which is difficult to complete with the mandated order to stay at home.
This may not affect me since my license is later in the year, but it does affect MANY of our RDHs! Not only are the courses to get CEs been cancelled but a reduction in pay due to not being able to work will be very difficult to afford the renewals.
Making a $200 payment at this time is a hardship for many of us. CPR is not available, we may not be able to work for months. Please consider postponing renewal fees. Thank you
I would love to pay my renewal, but with all that’s happening with our jobs with Covid 19, if it comes down to feeding my kids or renewing my license...well. I’d love it if you guys would support us in this time of need
Please postpone RDH and RDHAP license renewals for a period of time until hygienists can safely acquire our updated CPR recertifications. Please consider postponing our licensure renewal as it's abundantly clear it would be physically impossible to attend any CE courses with the shelter in place order. Yes, there are online courses, but they often are only 1-2 units per course whereas an in person course is usually 4-6.
