I support this nomination because the building complex was a significant venue for both live theatre and experimental art cinema. My father ran the coronet the first 12 years of my life. This theater was a monumental home to me and continues to be. It was no doubt one of the most important cultural monuments of Los Angeles.
This is a wonderful old theater space which provided hours of joy and entertainment to me personally over the years. And the fact that it was built by a woman makes its historical significance that much greater.
The Coronet Theatre is a national treasure. Its importance in the history of not only theatre and film but American Literature is a part of Los Angeles that should be preserved and cherished.
I studied improv with the amazing Cynthia Szigeti at the Coronet and it opened doors for me in my journey as a writer. The theater is a historical landmark and I support it with my signature here.
I am in support of designating the coronet theater a historical landmark. The rich history and thriving current programming are such an important part of Los Angeles culture. I’ve attended several comedy and music shows at this theater, and feel it is a beacon of hope for the LGBTQ community and the diverse culture in LA.
The Coronet is a cultural gem and needs to be protected and preserved.
