we just heard back and the new bear hunting rules are officially going through. i cant believe we actually pulled this off and im so glad we finally have a plan that makes sense for our woods.

Petition on suggested rule changes to help in the over population of bears in Wayne county. Will be submitted to the nine DNR district commissioner in Kentucky.
Because our weather is so condusive for bear population we are seeing anywhere from 1-4 cubs per sow every two years. This is allowing a possible doubling of the bear population every two years. The bears have become a nuisance to agriculture crops as well as in our observation diminishing the deer population drastically. We are getting less deer on trail cameras and have found deer that bears have eaten. We feel as if measures aren’t put in place to help keep down the population of bears we will only see a worsening of these issues as well as other issues arising as bears begin to compete for food sources.
We suggest the following changes;
1. We propose to bring the first dog running season in after bow season rather than before and leave it in for 2 weeks consecutive weeks. this would allow for the bear to be less disturbed for a more successful archery season. This would also increase the success rate as there are more archery hunters than dog hunters.
2. We propose allowing bears to be shot over deer grain sites this would increase the license sales as anyone that is deer hunting and knew they have bear coming in could legally take a bear while deer hunting. It would also relieve the guilt of those that know they have bear coming to a deer sight to feel as if they could continue to bait the deer legally and legally kill a bear on their property (if you call Frankfort they will tell you if there is one bait pile on 10,000 acres you can’t hunt bear legallly)
3. We propose to continue muzzleloader with gun bear and allow shooting over deer grain sites as well.
4. We propose to increase the length of the archery bear season by starting it earlier. Picket county Tennessee that is just adjacent to Wayne county have a month long season one bear per hunter that starts in September and runs into October.
5 It may take zoning out in a different zone the problem counties in order to not hurt the population in other counties
We believe these proposal's can resolve some of the bear problems we are having in our county.

been talking to so many of you who are losing crops and seeing bear activity right in your backyards. its clear this isnt just a quiet issue anymore so im busy getting these points ready for the dnr commissioners.

the momentum we have right now is honestly incredible and shows just how many others are seeing the same issues in the woods. it is clear that people want these rules changed so we can get a handle on the bear population before things get even worse for our deer and crops.

I live in the green ford area of Wayne county and this year alone the bears destroyed my brothers garden and completely wrecked our trash box. We need this to happen as I’m a deer hunter mainly but the bears have became a problem and I had less deer this on a camera close by my house than ever before
Drastically needs to be done in the mt pisgah community, deer population has decreased by 60%, thousands of dollars in crop damage, that comes out of our pockets, with no restitution.
I have hunted bear in Ontario and 4 states in U.S. I have never seen bear populations in such small condensed areas than the area in few counties bordering Tn. I’ve had bear to come up tree on me more than once in Wayne Co. While bow hunting for deer but I would not take the bear for fears of the nonsense regulations of the Ky Fish a Wildlife about grain being legally placed for deer hunting. Many days of deer hunting produced seeing more bear than deer. The bear hunting regulations in many of these counties MUST be changed to both balance the herds of deer an bear.
I’ve lost a lot of money because of the over population of bears in the se part of Wayne cnty. Not only have they cost farmers thousands in crop damage but they’re super destructive destroying anything they can get too because they’re really curious creatures. We need a month long season through the month of October to really control their numbers. When you have more being shot in one corn field than is taken in the whole state in one season something needs to be addressed.
As a hunter in Wayne County I personally have noticed less deer population on our property over the last few years. Our property was also one of the first in the county to suffer crop damage from bears. Our property is close to the TN line and has been hit before others. As a child hunting I have saw the ground black with turkeys and now you are lucky to see 4-5 at a time. Between the bears and large cats in our areas our deer and turkey have no chance at growing their numbers. If this continues my 6 year old daughter will have nothing left to hunt. Something must be done to help our situation.
I think killing them over a bait pile and eating them is better than bow hunters gut shooting them and letting them run off and die because they don’t want them eating their corn and running their deer off or the farmers shooting them and letting them lay there and rot.
I’m an out of state on leased property and spending money for out of state license these changes would help for a more successful harvest.

Not only do bears (not indigenous to Wayne County) roll down/destroy our crops, we must seek special permissions to help ensure the safety of our farm workers--especially during harvest time. Efforts to reduce their population are warranted.
