Protect green open space in Ripon City Centre now
Why is it important to request that Harrogate Borough Council designate the land off Tower Road Ripon HG4 1HJ as Local Green Space......
Tower Road Field is a special place in Ripon. Lying close to the City centre it is remarkable for having never been built on and now forms an ecologically important green corridor right to the heart of the City. It once formed part of the land of North Lodge and was planted in the early 19th century with horse chestnut and beech trees around its perimeter. These trees, over 50 of them, are now substantial mature specimens and together make up perhaps the finest collection in Ripon after those in the Old College campus. There is established public access to a footpath on the eastern side of the site and local children use it for informal recreation. This tranquil and rare survivor deserves to be kept undeveloped not least because of known unstable ground conditions. Instead it has the potential to become both a much-needed local area for informal recreation and provide a haven for flora and fauna in the centre of the City.
