It has recently come to our attention that the Fayette County Board of Education has decided to get rid of the journalism program at Starr's Mill High School in an effort to cut spending. We feel that this is an incredibly myopic decision. The Starr's Mill journalism program and its publication, The Prowler, provides a wonderful outlet for students who have a talent for writing and reporting, and it also provides students with an opportunity to get a feel for what it is like to work in a newsroom while still in high school. Currently, there are four alumni of the journalism program working at newspapers throughout the southeast, and several others credit much of the success that they have had in their chosen careers to their experiences in the journalism program. Due to the positive impact journalism has had on the lives of so many former and current students, we humbly request that you reconsider your decision to cut the program.
