Sign on today and tell the district to adopt the revised wellness policy that will prioritize student health and wellbeing and ensure the district is meeting current federal standards.
The new policy includes recommendations developed by family leaders that:
- Frames student health and wellness within a racial health equity framework
- Enhances accountability for communication and implementation of the policy
- Develops stronger language to support enforcement and implementation of the policy
- Provides better communication with families about the wellness policy
- Includes language about the importance of play based learning
- Strengthens language to ensure recess isn't taken away as a form of punishment
- Adopts a new clause in support of safe routes to school for all students
- Develops a breastfeeding policy for students and staff
- Creates a new policy that says food shall not be used as a reward or punishment
- Updates current nutrition sections to meet federal school meals requirements
- Updates the healthy, physical activity and nutrition education pieces to meet current New York State Department of Education guidelines
- Strengthens language to support professional development for educators and staff on the importance of student health & wellness
- Prioritizes throughout the policy that implementation occur within an inclusive and culturally responsive and sustaining framework
- Adopts comprehensive language to address healthy marketing in schools
- Encourages healthy fundraising and celebration guidelines
- Ensures communication of school meals menus to students and families
- Supports farm to school initiatives to improve school meals
- Includes the School Breakfast Program within nutrition and school meals sections
- Establishes a RCSD Meals Advisory Council
- Identifies how educators can work with support services to address health in the classroom.
