The local council has formally approved the budget to reinstate the footpath connecting Rathpeacon to the city. We will monitor the procurement process to ensure construction begins on schedule.

Final supporters
Rathpeacon Community Association are working towards reinstating the path linking Rathpeacon with the City. This means restoring the path from Farm Power to the School along the Old Mallow Road.
There are only 6 parking places for the children of both Rathpeacon NS and First Friends pre-school to be dropped and collected and the area is incredibly congested. The road around the school is also a main road for farm machinery and a Bus Eireann vehicle also passes the school at collection time. All these factors mean there are very dangerous road conditions for children attending the school.
The section of road leading up to the school from both directions is currently unsafe for walking so parents can only drive their children to school. Traffic outside the school, and surrounding roads, has reached a critical point and action needs to be taken to reduce this.
The path would have many benefits for the community including:
- Children would be able to safely walk to school, promoting health, fitness and independence
- Encouraging an active lifestyle
- Reduce traffic, double parking on pavements and alleviate congestion at the school
- An increase in pedestrians in the area may result in decrease in speed the cars are travelling at
- Allow customers to access local businesses without entrances being blocked
- Ensure residents' driveways are not blocked permitting access to their properties at all times, especially during peak hours
- Local residents will be able to walk safely in their local area, increasing community within the area and enhancing the area
- Reduce risks factors for accidents - currently it is incredibly dangerous for children to cross the road
- This path with link with Sweeney’s Hill and creates a good, safe walking loop. There would be the potential of creating a Sli Na Slainte walk.

We have reached the two hundred and fifty signature threshold. I am currently preparing the formal submission package for the council to ensure our traffic safety concerns are documented by the relevant departments.

The overgrown footpath is an accident waiting to happen. If the council put half the effort (and money) that they put into patching the water pipe in the same area the footpath could be gold plated!
Yes this footpath is badly needed but should be done in conjunction with Irishwater replacing the pipeline. The small section of footpath that they have already layed has been dug up due to yet another leak. We don’t want to see this happen in the future.
The safety of our community is unquestionable and appropriate footpaths are paramount to this. A child being struck by a car at 30kmph can be fatal. In a time where we are promoting health and exercise the reinstatement of these footpaths is vital for personal safety but also the promotion of health & wellbeing.
I would like to see the footpath reinstated as i walk up this road all the time and would to be able to walk my young children to school but it just isn't safe to do so now with the traffic but they would be safer if there was a proper path there...
This is madness not to have a footpath en rout to a school& also the lack of safe parking is a huge issue
Badly needed as road is busy at peak times for traffic making walking hazardous. Worse again when it’s wet
A noticeable problem in the infrastructure around the school. Quite dangerous.
