My name is Doug Gates and I am a teacher of 28 years and the founder of MorePE (Motivated Obesity Reduction, Education, & Prevention Endeavor). My goal is to make state legislative changes, starting in Ohio, to address the inequity and inconsistency of Physical Education within our public schools.
Physical Education is a vital to the physical and the mental development of our students. Physical fitness has been proven to: increase student academic performance, improve attention span, improve sleep patters, and reduces symptoms of ADHD. This is on top of the health benefits that address obesity, which leads to out number 1 cause of death (heart disease), diabetes and other health issues.
Currently, in Ohio, we are required to assess every student in a grade band from each of these levels K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. However, there is NO mandate on the amount of time students are to spend in Physical Education! Some schools are able to have their students daily, while other school only have Physical Education just 1 day a week! Furthermore, another problem we are facing is that many Physical Education classes are being taught by teachers or aides who have no certification in Physical Education! Not only is the reduction in quality and quantity of Physical Education hindering academic performance, it is contributing to childhood obesity, illness and rising health costs! Politicians and PE advocates talk about addressing obesity, but no one wants to step up to the plate and address the real problem, and the real solution which is in the physical education of our students.

Please take an active stance with me to show our government and community, how Physical Education is VITAL to the mental and physical development of our students.
