Save Christina's Job
It has come to our attention that Christina Canaski, Supervisor of Student Services, is being laid off due to budget cuts. Christina Canaski has been responsible for the most visible department on campus and is the only one true link between students and DeVry administration. She has been an advocate for the well-being of students since January 2009 by constantly interacting with them on a daily basis, outreaching to them, and by helping them with any issue that may arise. Christina Canaski's position is important to the atmosphere of this campus just as it is to other campuses that have two or three full time positions under the same department. The impacts of Christina's dismissal would affect the planning of graduation, the setup of orientation every session, housing for students, student related events, funding for clubs, and judicial student judicial hearings. Our proposal for keeping Student Services Supervisor Christina Canaski's position and department is this: 1. Limit the overtime worked by employees campus wide. 2. Cut back on operation times to all departments. For example, Student Central and the Academics Department cut their hours of operation back to 7:00 PM. 3. Install energy-efficient lights in classrooms, and ensure lights and computers are turned off when not in use. Computers are left on for days at a time when no one is using them which increases electricity bills. 4. Minimize the budget for employee-related events and student-related events. 5. Scale back department budgets. 6. Eliminate cable in the Student Commons. 7. Cut back on raises. We feel that there are other means to saving money than eliminating Christina Canaski’s position. Those who have signed this petition feel that it is a mistake to allow Christina to be laid off. We truly value her presence at the Crystal City Campus and we feel she deserves to stay in her current position.
