The landlords finally agreed to leave the trees and the garden beds alone. My hands are still shaking from the relief of knowing these plants stay exactly where they belong. We kept the garden intact.

Wally's garden is a gift to the neighborhood, to Berkeley, and to California horticulture. It's a significant enhancement to the property it surrounds. The garden includes some extremely rare plants unseen in other publicly accessible California gardens.
Wally can easily clear a path between the plants and the wall of the building for whatever needs to happen there. Not necessary to take out the whole garden . . . it's beautiful and adds to the neighborhood. The landlords probably are using this as an excuse for kicking him out of this rent-controlled space.
Truly a botanical landmark with so many rare plants like the Lapageria vine that is flowering right now. The Garden is such a blessing not only to Berkeley residents but anybody who appreciates plants and nature.
This gorgeous garden is one of those botanical wonderlands that makes Berkeley Berkeley. Property owners paint buildings all the time without destroying neighborhood-enhancing (and property-value-enhancing) mature landscaping. K&S are landlords engaging in bullying a tenant.
I have had many pleasurable afternoon in this same garden, has relieved from the sun, the chilly morns. This garden is tranquil and has brought so many smiles from a passerby. Please DoNot Destroy Wallace Gorell's Garden.
I used to walk by this garden all the time when I lived in North Berkeley. It was always a beautiful mystery, since I did not know who had so lovingly cultivated a piece of jungle in the city. It's a beautiful piece of art and I hope that the landlords are not so short-sighted as to force its removal.
The garden is a gift and landmark on Virginia St. I understand the need to paint the building, but I urge the landlords to find another solution than destroying a garden that is rare, beautiful and gives great value to the neighborhood. I adore this precious garden and if it is compromised will protest and use any opportunity I can to oppose the landlord and its management firm K K in any efforts of their's in Berkeley. I live a block away from Wally's garden. I live there at least in part *because* of his garden. It is not only beautiful but also makes me feel like I live in a community. The care that has gone into that garden is easy to see, and it makes me happy to know it is the work of a neighbor.
