We are against East Ayrshire Council's proposal to save £249,240 on the schools music instruction budget. We understand that this amount has to be saved by the year 2015-16. As former Stewarton Academy band members, we are aware of the value and importance of school music tuition. If East Ayrshire Council's proposal is agreed, we fear that the four Stewarton Learning Community bands will be severely affected and possibly cease to exist.
The hard work and dedication of over 200 pupils, their families, the staff and the immeasurable commitment of the Stewarton bands support group could be destroyed. There is incredible musical talent within East Ayrshire and it is brought about by the music instruction. Each of the four bands have achieved numerous prestigious awards while taking part in festivals around the UK.
Having been taught to play musical instruments from the age of 10 with no previous experience, we know the value and end result of the hard work from both pupil and instrumental teacher. We have developed many other qualities such as strong communication skills, great confidence and the ability to work as a team, which are all essential for life beyond school.
We ask East Ayrshire Council to reconsider their proposal and continue to invest in the instrumental teaching service. Our success is due to the continued teaching of the staff and we believe the immense talents of all concerned should be treasured.
