Save Ripon Cinema
The Ripon Cinema is treasured by its local community. Adored not only by film lovers, but by writers and artists who regularly came to open-mic nights at the cinema to share ideas, discuss topical artistic ideas and to encourage the next generation of thinkers and creators in this important and historic area. We are deeply disappointed that Curzon has decided to stop running the cinema, at a time when the industry is bouncing back after the difficult times during the Covid pandemic. With a stable of lucrative cinemas around the country, we feel that Curzon should have done more to keep this crucial part of the local community running as recognition of its status as part of the cultural life of Ripon and the surrounding areas.
We feel that Curzon has abandoned this cinema at a time when it was again beginning to thrive. It's not just a place to watch films - it acts as a vital local hub for artists, film-lovers, writers and budding visual creators to meet, talk and network. Please add your support to highlight how much we loved this cinema.
UPDATE - we have contacted a councillor in London who is fighting to save his local cinema. A copy of the letter we have sent to him is here:
Dear Councillor Lilley,
We are writing to you in the hope that you might please help our cause.
We have read that you are an expert in campaigning to save cinemas. Will you help us try to protect our wonderful little cinema?
The Ripon cinema was abandoned by Curzon this summer. We cannot emphasize enough how much this has devastated our small community.
Your knowledge of running a viable cinema could really help us. This was the heart and soul of our small but tightly-knit town. This cinema was the only place for many people in Ripon to meet friends and socialize – often their only opportunity to do so. Now they have nowhere else to go, and no friends to meet.
We are SO disappointed that Curzon has decided to stop funding our cinema, because it does not make enough profit.
We feel that Curzon has abandoned us, to concentrate on more profitable cinemas. But cinema is not just about profit – it is about love of art, about love of people, and about friendship.
