We oppose the suspension of the College of New Caledonia Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs as recommended by the Executive of the College of New Caledonia. These programs provide opportunities for students north of the lower mainland and have provided quality education for 46 and 28 years respectively.
The graduates of the Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs fill a community need in private dental offices and other health care facilities in our northern district. However, College of New Caledonia graduates are employed in all corners of the BC Dental Community.
We see this as a short-sighted proposal that will greatly impact the needs of students, the daily operations of community dental offices (especially northern), and the oral health and welfare of the residents of British Columbia.
We request the College Board of the College of New Caledonia reject the recommendation made by the Executive of the College of New Caledonia and continue to intake Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene students for the September 2015 intake and onward.
