Tons of frogs, reptiles and birds have lived in the retention pond by the Mantua Pool. Recently, a (likely breeding) pair of beavers has been living in the pond. Beavers actually mate for life and are very important for humans and non-humans alike, improving water quality, increasing water storage, providing habitat for many wildlife species and more.

Today, the county has begun draining this pond and has plans to remove and kill these beavers within the week. The Virginia state policy is lethal removal unless there is a permit to relocate them.
