Save the Beaverkill Campground
William C. Janeway Regional Director for DEC's Region 3 office 21 South Putt Corners Road New Paltz, NY 12561-1696 Dear Mr. Janeway, As a resident and taxpayer of New York State I am urging you to keep the Beaverkill Campground open. Your recent announcement that the Beaverkill Campground in Sullivan County will be one of six in the state that will be shuttered because of the fiscal crisis will have a negative impact on the economy of Sullivan County. The Beaverkill Campground is not only a historic landmark, but an economic engine for the community of Sullivan County as a whole. Last year was a significant year for campgrounds in Sullivan County and all signs indicate that the use of the campgrounds will continue to increase. Available financial data indicates that closing the campground will only save the state a few thousand dollars while dramatically impacting the tourism economies of Roscoe and Livingston Manor. I urge you to reconsider the closing of the Beaverkill Campground. I strongly believe that the negative economic impact of closing this site will greatly outweigh the short term savings the state may incur by closing the campground.
