Scleroderma or systemic sclerosis is a chronic disease of the immune system, blood vessels and connective tissue, scleroderma can attack many body systems. It is very hard to diagnose because each person may have a different combination of symptoms, and the disease progresses at different rates for everyone. One of the hallmarks is the thickening or hardening of the skin. Scleroderma can cause serious damage to internal organs including the lungs, heart, kidneys, esophagus, and gastrointestinal tract. As such, it is often referred to as a “multi-system” disease. It can be life-threatening. Scleroderma is three to four times more prevalent in women. This effort is a valuable opportunity for the public and the patients to have a better understanding of Scleroderma and help them cope with it through mutual support programs.
