Sport on 7fm - Ballymena
Local sport coverage outside of the Ballymena Times and Ballymena Guardian is more scarce today than ever before. With BBC and UTV more likely to cover major sports events only, local sport gets little or no air time on radio or television. Up to now we, in Ballymena, had Seven FM at the forefront of local sports, in the form of 'On The Ball' on a Friday, and the 'Sky Blue Sports Show' on a Sunday. Both these shows were fronted by Davy King, a man very much involved in local sport. These shows covered more sports than we ever knew existed, covering local football, GAA, Rugby, Hockey, Snooker, Pigeon Racing, Motor Sports, Cancer Research Walk for Life and much more. Better than this, they produced coverage in so much depth, that it appealed to young and old alike. No other show in the country can go down memory lane for the older listeners, followed by an in depth report on the latest under 10's match. Recently, a decision was made that this show was "no longer needed", that the sport loving people of Ballymena didn't matter all of a sudden. It was withdrawn with immediate effect, with no warning, and no explanation to the listening public. It has been replaced, not by another local programme, but rather by a show broadcast from Q97.2 in Coleraine, which does not include Ballymena sport in it's remit, never mind anything near the amount of coverage that Davy King managed to put into his shows. This petition will be put to the decision makers at 7FM, Northern Media Group and it's Directors, that 7FM is not fulfilling it's remit as a 'local station'. That the public feel let down by this terrible decision, and would urge it to be overturned, or Seven FM will lose whatever standing they had within local sports. Please add your name to get local sports back onto the airwaves.
