We are writing to you as parents and caregivers of SFUSD students to express our unwavering support for our children’s teachers and school staff, and to urge the District to take bold action to reach a fair settlement in contract negotiations.

Every day we see our kids go to school happy to learn and come home smiling because of the professionalism and dedication of their teachers, custodians, cafeteria workers, nurses, secretaries, paraprofessionals, and other District staff. But we also see first-hand every day the untenable conditions that educators and staff are working under, and we know that they are holding strike votes because the District has not addressed these problems.

In one of the wealthiest cities in the world, our students are not receiving the support and academic resources they need and deserve. Staff shortages fueled by low salaries and the broken payroll system mean that our teachers and other staff are working harder than ever, going beyond their responsibilities to fill gaps left by the unsustainable crisis our city’s schools are in. When one in four essential SFUSD staff positions is unfilled, our kids feel the impact of this every day, too.

It is incumbent on you, our District and City leaders, to commit the resources needed to deliver the contract our teachers and school staff deserve. We stand in solidarity with our teachers and staff in calling for agreements that provide fully staffed schools, manageable workloads, healthy food and classroom supports for students, liveable wages, and protections to ensure staff get paid. We agree with educators and staff that addressing these long-standing issues is the clearest path out of the staffing crisis our district is facing.

Time and again, San Francisco voters have done their part to fund schools with local dollars, but it is clear to us that these funds have not been put to good use. Our children should not have to bear the brunt of years of district mismanagement, while SFUSD leadership perpetuates unnecessary levels of bureaucracy and elected officials pass blame from one institution to another. It is time to move toward solutions and be a model for what a fully-funded, equitable, and sustainable public school system can look like.

We are proud to be part of SFUSD, and our families are proud to support the teachers and staff who make the system work. We share your vision of world-class schools for every San Francisco child, and we look forward to your actions that will make that vision a reality.

Les escribimos a ustedes como padres y cuidadores de los estudiantes del SFUSD para expresar nuestro apoyo a los maestros y al personal escolar de nuestros niños, y para urgar al Distrito a tomar las medidas necesarias para llegar a un acuerdo justo en las negociaciones laborales.

Todos los días vemos a nuestros niñes ir a la escuela felices de aprender y regresar a casa sonriendo por el profesionalismo y la dedicación de sus maestros, conserjes, trabajadores de la cafetería, enfermeras, secretarias, paraprofesionales y otro personal del Distrito. Pero también vemos de primera mano todos los días las condiciones insostenibles en las que trabajan los educadores y el personal, y sabemos que están realizando votaciones de huelga porque el Distrito no ha abordado estos problemas.

En una de las ciudades más ricas del mundo, nuestros estudiantes no reciben el apoyo ni los recursos académicos que necesitan y merecen. La escasez de personal alimentada los bajos salarios y el sistema de nómina fallido significa que nuestros maestros y otro personal están trabajando más duro que nunca, yendo más allá de sus responsabilidades para llenar los puestos dejados vacíos por la crisis insostenible en la que se encuentran las escuelas de nuestra ciudad. Cuando uno de cada cuatro puestos esenciales del personal del SFUSD está vacío, nuestros niños también sienten el impacto de esto todos los días.

Corresponde a ustedes, nuestros líderes del Distrito y la Ciudad, comprometer los recursos necesarios para cumplir el contrato que nuestros maestros y personal escolar merecen. Estamos en solidaridad con nuestros maestros y personal al demandar acuerdos que brinden escuelas con personal completo, cargas de trabajo manejables, alimentos saludables y apoyo en el aula para los alumnos, salarios dignos y protecciones para garantizar que el personal reciba su salario. Estamos de acuerdo con los educadores y el personal en que abordar estos problemas que han existido por mucho tiempo es el camino más claro para salir de la crisis de personal que enfrenta nuestro distrito.

Una y otra vez, los votantes de San Francisco han hecho su parte para financiar escuelas con dólares locales, pero para nosotros está claro que estos fondos no se han utilizado bien. Nuestros niños no deberían tener que soportar la peor parte de años de mal liderazgo del distrito, mientras que el liderazgo del SFUSD perpetúa niveles innecesarios de burocracia y los funcionarios electos pasan la culpa de una institución a otra.
