We believe that reasoned debate and discussion can help to de-escalate tensions in light of the current political climate. The Skeptics Peace Pledge is intended to provide common ground for everyone who believes that through dialogue, we can create understanding, expand our views and solve problems.

As a skeptic who believes in the potential value and goodness of human beings, I pledge to:

  • Promote respectful dialogue:
    • Listen before replying
    • Minimize interruptions
    • Ask questions
    • Explore alternative viewpoints
    • Try to find common ground
  • Engage in conversation with those of differing opinions
  • Allow others to express their views, whether I agree or not
  • Practice non-violence and control my feelings, rather than be controlled by them
  • Discourage those who promote violence
  • Be open-minded and admit any personal biases
  • Value evidence over dogma
  • Do my research before making judgments
  • Recognize that people can change their views
  • Recognize that I might be wrong

The Skeptic's Peace Pledge was developed by Mythicist Milwaukee, a secular organization focused on promoting dialogue about culture, religion and freedom of thought.

I am honestly overwhelmed by how many people have gathered here to choose thoughtful conversation over conflict. This momentum belongs entirely to you and your willingness to sit down with those who see the world differently.

The right of free speech and starting discussions on important topics is essential in the current political climate. People should never think it's ok to resort to violence to stop something so important to a Democracy.

I won't be able to attend the event in person, but I wanted to show my support for rationality and open communication; a rather rare trait and commodity these days, unfortunately. You guys have earned so much respect from me. I didn't really know much about this event until this year, so this is an amazing first impression!

Everyone deserves the right to have debates and discussions. Without this, were not really people. We're sheep.

Great Job promoting dialogue and respectful discourse! I will pass this pledge along to our Chicago Latino Atheist group members.

Reality says that civil and correct methods of communication are the only ways that logic and disagreements can be analyzed and effectively discussed
