With the drug epidemic in our country along with the MS13 gang members polluting our society I would think that this would be a no brainer.

Let's promote loving families and legal businesses. Take away the freedom of these get-rich-quick criminals that have contributed to the distress and death of our family members and friends.

This is backwards, blame the dealers not the addicts? One dealer gets popped another takes their place. The reward will almost always outweigh the risk in their minds. Also, where do we set the amount one has to sell in order to receive the minimum sentence? Is it fair that an addict who picked up an extra bundle for an acquaintance gets sentenced the same as a person selling multiple bricks a day? What about the people just trying to support their families? Not all dealers are “hardened thugs” like the media would lead you to believe. Things aren’t always so black and white. What we need is more sensible drug laws that consider evidence from other countries who have had some successes in reducing drug abuse. Decriminalization, harm reduction, and education are what we should be focusing on. You take the drugs off the black market and it suddenly becomes a lot less profitable to sell them. The quality of the product would be pure as well. We wouldn’t have people overdosing because they got bags cut with Fetanyl, or some other crap. And with some needle exchanges or safe injection sites we could significantly reduce the spread of HIV, Hepatitis and other diseases passed through sharing needles and other unsanitary injection practices. And finally we should be having recovering addicts with various amounts of clean time speaking in schools, detailing the obliterating effect drug and alcohol abuse can have on one’s life, as well as the lives of those close. One last note, a dealer never made me stick a needle in my arm, I made that decision myself in a very weak mental state. We as addicts need to take responsibility for our actions, and those that aren’t addicts should be petitioning for reduced sentences for non violent drug offenders and focus more on rehabilitation. A lot of addicts are self medicating with drugs and alcohol. I have seen a great shift towards this healthcare based approach but we still have a ways to go.
