Speed Humps Saving lives in Vaughan
In March 2003 a teen was hit by a car on Athabasca Drive in Vaughan and later died of his injuries. In May 2021 two children were also hit by a car on Athabasca Drive and later succumbed to their injuries. An adult fixing their bike chain survived the terrible tragedy and was badly injured. Others have also been injured by speeding vehicles, as well as distracted and careless drivers.
We need vehicles to slow down and ask the City of Vaughan to bring back speed humps or a more updated version that promotes traffic calming. All-way stops only have a temporary effect, if any, on speeding. Larger signs indicating speed limits, children playing in the area, or seniors crossing/walking are a viable beginning. Electronic speed boards, education, and other strategies are also only part of the solution. Speed humps and similar traffic-calming measures significantly slow down vehicles and may prevent unnecessary accidents and deaths. Please support this petition to promote safe communities.
