To: Stanford University Athletics Department October 17, 2008 According to the Stanford University athletics website, http://gostanford.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/redzone.html “The new Red Zone sections are 105, 106, 108, 109-111. This will give the Cardinal a new home field advantage and provide great support behind the team bench.” This is a blatant contradiction to what loyal student fans faced last Saturday, October 13, at the Homecoming game vs. Arizona. Half of section 111, clearly designated as part of the Red Zone student section, was taped off ambiguously as “Reserved for Stanford Guests.” This was not much of a surprise because chunks of increasing size in our student section have been blocked from student use during each of this season’s home games. The new student section has already proven to be too small for this year’s student turnout to football games, and it is unfair to deny student fans of any of their already scarce seats in an otherwise embarrassingly empty stadium. Why are we being treated as second-rate spectators when we are the core of the Stanford football fan base As important as recruits and their families are to all of us, there are more appropriate places to seat them than in our student section— especially when they are not [yet] cheering, standing members of the crowd like the rest of the Red Zone. With all due respect to the recruits and their families, they stayed seated and silent virtually the entire game, creating the illusion of a quiet and lifeless student section. Especially after Saturday’s game, numerous members of the football team expressed disappointment and shame in the nearly silent kickoff cheering and overall level of audible support from their fellow students. The student seats behind the team bench are a crucial part of the Red Zone and need to be filled with those of us who can and will make our support loud and clear to our team. Please grant us full rights once again to our Red Zone student section so we can proudly support our football team at the level they deserve. Sincerely, The Undersigned
