A commercial developer, Tricor International, has submitted a special use permit and rezoning application to James City County to build “Monticello Avenue Shops,” at the intersection of Monticello Avenue and Windsor Meade Way in Williamsburg, Virginia. The shops would be a retail location on 2.75 acres on the south side of the Monticello Avenue.

As anyone who drives through that part of the county will tell you, there is a high volume of traffic and significant travel delay as it stands today. Adding more shops and creating a new flow of traffic that includes an altered stop light pattern to allow for entry into the new shopping area will be detrimental for those who travel that road daily.

In order for the developer to be granted permission for construction, the James City County Planning Office and the James City County Board of Supervisors have to approve a special use permit to allow the area to be rezoned from “Rural Residential” to “General Business”.

We need your help to keep this from happening! Please sign the petition to let the Planning Office members and Board of Supervisors know that you do not want additional traffic in this area and to deny the special use permit for Tricor International. Our daily quality of life is more important than the real estate tax revenue that James City County stands to gain from this development. Remember, James City County collects real estate tax revenue even if buildings are VACANT. That is why they continue to approve new construction while a good percentage of existing buildings sit empty.

Important dates to remember: December 4th, planning meeting. If approved by the Planning Commission it will be put in front of the Board of Supervisors at their January 14th, meeting.
