We, the undersigned, are outraged that Tom Otterness has been commissioned to create sculptures for public buildings, spaces and museums by cities all over the country. Before becoming a highly rewarded sculptor, Otterness adopted a dog from a shelter with the express singular purpose of shooting it to death and filming it. The result, "Shot Dog Film," which showed a hand holding a pistol, then shooting a small dog chained to a stake. The "performance art" was the film's premiere, where " ... as best as I could do it, was the most aggressive way I could think of to show a film, the most damaging thing that I could do to the audience by showing a film." (http://98bowery.com/) The influencers as well as the general public need to be aware of this sociopathic act before commissioning any and all public art projects to Otterness.Though Otterness has apologized, we recognize this as little more than lip service. Until he makes -- and discloses -- substantial restitution to humane societies and organizations, he should be considered the worst possible candidate imaginable to create sculptures for spaces and buildings that are ostensibly for for the public good.
