this petition is for a school project while doing research We had a look on many different sites including the Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of primary industry to try and find out how many undersized fish are caught every year but it did not give us an answer meaning they are not longing or even checking how many undersized fish are caught every year. There are 642 fisheries in New Zealand and 600 mariners in New Zealand but this is not counting the hundreds of wharf's and boat ramps. This means that there are many places where people can get away with catching undersized fish with nobody knowing that they were ever there; it also doesn't help that most fisheries are under-staffed.

did you know In 2018 7 million various different spices of fish were caught and 3.9 million different species of shellfish were caught. Now that is a lot of fish. The size regulations for some of New Zealand's most popular fish to catch: Snapper=30cm, King Fish=75cm , John Dory=no limit, kahawai=no limit, gurnard=no limit. Half of these fish have no limit which is bad because they may not have a chance to breed. Also you are only allowed to catch 7 fish a day. If you do not follow these rules and limits you can get all of your fishing and boating gear seized this includes your boat, rods, and the vehicle you used to tow your boat. Also you can get fined 10,000-250,000 NZ dollars. You are legally required to follow these fishing rules.

are last point for are petition is basically how we could solve these problems .Running a coast guard service costs 20 million dollars a year this includes volunteers, paid employees, and all of the vessels. New Zealand has 44 marine reserves. But there are over 250,000,000 rivers, lakes and freshwater sources. A lot of these contain a breed of fish called Trout. An average sized marine reserve 5-10 square kilometres which will cost about 500,000-2,000,000 dollars depending on size. Fishery workers get paid around 55,000 dollars a year. And New Zealand's Labour party has funding of the ocean. It is 3.5 billion dollars meaning they could probably make room for more marine reserves, more staffing, more coast guard and fisheries workers doing this will help ensure our oceans are safe. They could also put out more ads to encourage people to volunteer for these services.
