George Hamill has been a fishmonger in Kirkintilloch for over 32 years, operating his fish van, "Shaky's Plaice" from the corner of the car park at Sainsbury's in Kirkintilloch for the last 18 of them. Indeed, when he started up his van, the car park belonged to the Co-op, the previous owners of the site. Sainsburys have just announced plans to expand their store and have given George 30 days notice to remove his business from the site. Shaky's Plaice is a small local business, owned by George and his wife, who are very active members of the Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs community. They know their customers personally, take an interest in them as people, especially their elderly patrons, and provide a unique service in Kirkintilloch. Even if Sainsburys expands to include a fresh fish counter, they will not provide a service where you can pre-order anything you want e.g. langoustines, oysters, clams, fresh crab etc. George offers this service - if it's in the fish market or can be sourced, George will get it for you. When a customer went to complain to the manager of Sainsburys, rather than justify the company's reasons, he was told by her that, "It's our land, we can do what we want." This is a case of a huge multi-national forcing a sole trader out of business - one who has served the Kirkintilloch community for over quarter of a century. If you want to stand up for a small, local business against the might of this large supermarket, please sign our on-line petition.
