STOP the "Pittsburgh Left" at Greenfield Avenue and Frazier Street!
I am a daily cyclist on Greenfield Avenue, and have had more encounters than I can count at the intersection of Greenfield Avenue and Fraizer Street (Swineburne Bridge). Each morning I ride down Greenfield Avenue to the bike trail that runs parallel to 2nd Avenue. Car traffic coming up the hill is always slow, but busy. Regardless, I've seen it too many times to count - both when I'm on my bike or in a car - that cars coming slowly up Greenfield will attempt a "Pittsburgh Left" from Greenfield Avenue onto Frazier Street/Swineburne Bridge.
Because traffic moves so slowly up the hill, drivers are almost always at a near-stop when they cut off people coming down the hill when attempting to get onto Frazier Street. This morning was the closest I've ever been to having a collision with a van that was attempting this. The driver was behind another vehicle that was slowly moving up the hill. We made eye contact, and they tried to quickly turn onto Frazier. I slammed on my brakes, lost control but stayed upright (somehow), and barely missed broadsiding them.
Again, I've seen people do this countless times regardless of whether I'm on my bike or in a car. It's a dangerous intersection because people coming slowly up the hill feel like they cannot make it onto Frazier without "chancing" it. I think a STOP sign should be considered at the intersection of Greenfield and Frazier for traffic coming up the hill. Or, maybe a STOP (for left turn only) at that intersection. Anyone making a left turn there needs to stop, and fully yield to oncoming traffic. This could also help make turning left from Frazier Street onto Greenfield Avenue safer, as well as anyone turning in any direction from Sylvan onto Greenfield Avenue.
Greenfield is seeing drastic growth in bike commuting, and it will only be a matter of time until there is a significant accident at this intersection if action is not taken.
Please put your zip code in the comments section so the City/Mayor's Office will have a record of it when I give it to them.
