Stop the Ryan Field Project!/¡Pare el Proyecto de la Cancha Ryan!
Stop the Ryan Field demolition/new construction and concerts!
Stop the Ryan Field project! Save Ryan Field, tribal land, archeological resources, ancestral burials, the canal, the environment, and peace and quiet! Stop the concerts!
The Ryan Field project causes problems on multiple levels. It gets rid of a treasure, Ryan Field/Dyche Stadium, which was declared eligible for the National Register of Historic Places by the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office. It was designed by James Gamble Rogers, who has many landmarks. It is linked to people such as Mayor Dyche, for whom the stadium was named, and Coach Walker, for whom Walker Way and the Randy Walker Terrace are named. It is a place of tradition, fun, and history. It should be an Evanston landmark. Save the Old Girl of Evanston! The ordinance approving demolition and the proposed memorandum of agreement are contradictory. The ordinance approving demolition says that the demolition “preserves historic resources” and that Ryan Field is “not historically significant.” The memorandum says that Ryan Field is historically significant and says that it was declared eligible for the National Register of Historic Places by an officer of the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office. Both Northwestern and the City of Evanston knew that the stadium was historically significant. They were notified that it had been declared eligible for the National Register of Historic Places by the Illinois State Historic Preservation Office. Northwestern also made a big deal about “all private dollars” in their demolition campaign, while not saying that they cannot use state or federal funds to demolish a place declared eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
Ryan Field was declared the “most amazing college stadium in Illinois” by Sports Management Degree Guide (https://www.sports-management-degrees.com/the-most-amazing-college-stadium-in-every-state/) won the Football Field of the Year award by the Sports Turf Managers Association twice (https://www.sportsfieldmanagement.org/football-field-year-winners). Ryan Field is in good condition as evidenced by the permits shown at https://aca-prod.accela.com/EVANSTON/Cap/CapHome.aspx?module=Building&TabName=Building looking under 1501 Central Street.
Ryan Field is on tribal land and the Native American Guardians Association has demanded a stop to the demolition and new construction to preserve this land, archeological resources, and ancestral burials. (https://wpde.com/news/nation-world/exclusive-native-group-behind-commanders-lawsuit-demands-northwestern-scrap-plans-for-800m-stadium-native-american-guardians-association-naga-university-evanston-illinois)
Additionally, the demolition and new construction would cause many environmental problems. Demolition and new construction cause much environment harm in themselves. The new stadium has water usage problems, including harming the canal by dumping drainage into it and removing groundwater from the land. The water dumped in the canal will cause flooding in Wilmette. (https://evanstonroundtable.com/2023/11/01/letter-to-the-editor-ryan-field-climate-plan-commitment/) (https://www.wbez.org/stories/hazing-scandal-and-the-fate-of-city-trees-interfere-with-nus-ryan-field-plans/92f348ee-d902-41f7-88e6-c91ce211c007)
Northwestern says that the concerts are necessary to fund demolition and new construction. That is reason enough to oppose the concerts, but there are other good reasons, too. Many neighbors in both Evanston and Wilmette have protested the idea of concerts in the new stadium. The concerts would create a lot of noise, traffic, and interference in usual activities (the salon, the fire station, and the hospital would all be negatively affected as shown in these links). (https://evanstonroundtable.com/2023/09/27/guest-essay-as-a-mom-who-works-on-central-street-i-oppose-ryan-field-plan/) (https://chicago.suntimes.com/2023/7/25/23805906/northwestern-ryan-field-stadium-renovation-evanston-hospital-northshore-ronald-meyer-op-ed) They would get rid of the peace and quiet in these municipalities.
(https://wpde.com/news/nation-world/exclusive-native-group-behind-commanders-lawsuit-demands-northwestern-scrap-plans-for-800m-stadium-native-american-guardians-association-naga-university-evanston-illinois)
(https://evanstonroundtable.com/2023/11/01/letter-to-the-editor-ryan-field-climate-plan-commitment/) (https://www.wbez.org/stories/hazing-scandal-and-the-fate-of-city-trees-interfere-with-nus-ryan-field-plans/92f348ee-d902-41f7-88e6-c91ce211c007)
(https://www.therecordnorthshore.org/2023/12/13/wilmette-residents-want-village-officials-to-keep-fighting-nus-ryan-field-plan/) (https://evanstonroundtable.com/2023/01/28/letter-to-the-editor-nu-do-not-ignore-stadiums-human-environmental-impact/)
