Climate change is already out of control, our world cannot afford any more extensive drilling operations. This drilling project will create an increase in natural disasters, impacts on agriculture, and living situations in the nearby communities. We must implore United States President Joe Biden to reject the idea to drill for oil in the Antarctic, much like many U.S. representatives, including ex Vice President, Al Gore who has voiced his concerns stating it would be “recklessly irresponsible”. The Willow Project is planned to create large quantities of oil that is held on the Alaskan North Slope and would be extracted during the course of the 30-year project. It is said doing so could produce up to 180,000 barrels of oil a day, yet the United States already has enough oil to date to meet their country’s need, and extracting more oil for political and business reasons is a selfish and unnecessary step for humanity in the 21st century. The Willow Project may have a disastrous effect on the western Arctic, endangering Indigenous peoples, degrading the water supply and air quality, and interfering with animal migration patterns. Numerous creatures, including arctic birds, seals, and polar bears, would be harmed if this project isn't stopped. The effects of climate change can be permanent. More animals will go extinct, and it might take decades, if not longer, for us to undo the damage.
