PETITION
In the interest of saving money and protecting student programming, the Chatham Central School District Board of Education is considering closing the Chatham Middle School as their only option. With about a month to go before the school board votes on consolidation (June 25), we the undersigned have become aware that many in our community do not understand what is happening, how decisions have been made and how this school building closure will impact the fabric of our community.
If, as a community, we must borrow many millions of dollars to consolidate our school system, we further believe that the Board should request and review more than one plan. Further, a massive construction project that will change the face of Chatham and the physical and aesthetic experience of the campus and neighborhood should be studied not only by a chosen group of consultants but by a diverse jury of stakeholders, as well as include public review of different solutions and budgets.
With all due respect to the dedicated work the Board has invested in the currently proposed conclusion, we the undersigned have serious misgivings about this strategy and are seeking a one-year extension of the consolidation vote that includes a thorough review of competitive solutions.
In signing this petition, I do hereby state that I reside and vote within the Chatham Central School District.
