PETITION TO THE LAKEWOOD CITY COUNCIL, LAKEWOOD, WASHINGTON

The city of Lakewood must stop allowing its native Garry oak trees to be killed. The trees must be designated as protected, and we must institute a new tree preservation code, since the current code is grossly inadequate. Currently, it is estimated that only 3% of the original Garry oak habitat exists, making it one of the rarest habitats in North America. They must not be cut down, improperly pruned, or mutilated in any way. Ivy and other invasive vines must not be allowed to grow on the trees, as this is a leading cause of oak death.

WILDLIFE: Many oaks in our city are hundreds of years old and Lakewood is privileged to be home to these trees and their critically imperiled habitat. This unique ecosystem provides food and habitat for birds, mammals, and pollinators, some of which are themselves threatened or endangered. Killing Garry oaks kills wildlife.

GLOBAL WARMING: Destroying Garry oaks accelerates global warming, and already vulnerable populations such as ethnic minorities are disproportionately harmed. The large tree canopies our Garry oaks create reduce temperatures by 6-10 degrees Fahrenheit and lower our energy consumption. They filter our ground water, purify our air, sequester carbon, and create oxygen. They are drought resistant and fire tolerant, making them the native tree species most likely to survive global warming at all.

DEGRADATION OF NEIGHBORHOODS: The signatories of this petition strongly oppose further development of warehouses anywhere in Lakewood. Despite the regulations requiring proper notification, residents near development sites remained unaware of planned warehouse projects. They had no chance therefore to voice their opposition, which should be their legal right. Warehouse development makes property values plummet and steals residents’ hard-earned wealth. The city has a moral imperative to protect its citizens’ well-being. The quality of life for the residents of Springbrook, Woodbrook, Sylvan Park, and elsewhere must not be further degraded.

This Petition of certain citizens of the City of Lakewood draws to the attention of the Lakewood City Council the need to prioritize surrounding residents, trees and habitat in any further development plans, and to have stringent protections for Garry oaks and other trees in the the City of Lakewood, as outlined in the above petition text.

If the extreme heatwave this past June wasn’t a wake up call, I don’t know what is. Clearly, neighborhoods with more MATURE trees fared better, and beyond what they can do for use many of these trees are older than the city of Lakewood itself. Cutting them down will forever tarnish the city’s reputation.

Please please leave those lovely old oaks. They are the most wonderful monuments that represent the prairie and waters of Lakewood. Don't pave the vistas and erect soulless boxes where rare beauty grows.

We’ve lost so much of Lakewood. I’ve been here since 1991. We need to reassess some of the environmental changes we are making! They can’t be undone! In my opinion we’ve already taken to much WOOD out of LAKEWOOD!

These beautiful trees have been disappearing at an alarming rate. The trees on our property regulate the temperature in our home and attract much wildlife. Many of the oaks in our neighborhood, where we have lived for 45 years, are gone!

I represent Whidbey Environmental Action Network, with hundreds of member households. We support protection of rare Garry oak systems wherever they occur, and encourage the city of Lakewood to do the same.

These trees are native to our bioregion and should be protected and nurtured for their ability to sequester carbon, habitat for a variety of animals, and natural beauty. Larry Rohan Professional Forester

Is destroying nature for yet ANOTHER WAREHOUSE OR STORAGE FACILITY REALLY NECESSARY? Why not put it on one of the many abandoned commercial building lots!!!
