This is a main intersection one block away from Mammoth Heights Elementary where many children and families cross each day. Cars drive very fast, as this is a main thoroughfare between S. Chambers Rd. & Jordan Rd. The yield signs are tiny and hard to see, as the road is on a slight curve.

(Accident information & photos provided by the Douglas County Sheriff's Department)

In the past 6 years, there have been 13 accidents at this intersection (up from 0 previously) due to the population boom in this neighborhood. Near misses are frequent and it is only a matter of time before a fatality occurs.

All previous efforts including crosswalk marks, yield signs and fluorescent signage have failed. Because of the curve, and because this is a main thoroughfare between 2 major roads, cars speed through here without foresight.

A stop sign is the only logical answer to this problem. Stop signs are not only the most effective but they are also the most cost-efficient. Blinking lights are expensive to install and maintain and they do not work as well. We have seen countless instances of drivers blowing through the crosswalks with blinking lights just up the road at Chaparral High School and we are not interested in this as a band-aid solution!

We need a stop sign for the speeding traffic on Aventerra!!

The county traffic commission says they've done their investigation previously and that a stop sign was not warranted, but we disagree. As the population has exploded, the need has changed - and we insist they revisit their investigation in light of this new data.

From one vigilant parent to another, please sign - and help me get this petition in front of the people who can help.
