Complete Music Curriculum Must Include Strings
Complete Music Curriculum Must Include Strings Be it resolved that we, the undersigned, agree that all Americans should support a comprehensive music education curriculum in our nation’s schools. We also believe that a comprehensive music education curriculum includes string and orchestra instruction. To that end, we call upon the U.S. Department of Education leaders and members of Congress to: Mandate that music and arts education be an integral part of every school curriculum; Ensure that a comprehensive music program provides children access to strings and orchestra, as well as band and chorus; Provide funding not only for comprehensive music programs, but also to train, support and nurture more orchestra teachers; and Support the development and implementation of meaningful assessment tools to ensure that school music programs follow a sequential orchestra curriculum, monitor progress, and provide accountability to school boards, parents, and the community. Be it also resolved that with the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, which is now pending in Congress, music will not only be listed as a core academic subject but school systems will also be provided with the funding and support needed to make a complete music curriculum accessible to every child studying in the public schools of America.
