This year 6th grade choir was dropped from the Unit 5 music curriculum. This has meant that 6th graders are the only students in Unit 5 not given an option for choral music. We, the undersigned, would like 6th grade choir restored to the curriculum for the following reasons:
1. Jr. high choirs build a foundation for the high school programs. Gaps in the curriculum are difficult to overcome.
2. 6th grade is a transitional year, in which getting involved in school programs boosts school spirit and creates a sense of community among jr. high students.
3. Music benefits our students intellectually as well as emotionally. Choral music is a tool for building self confidence and emotional health as well as reinforcing literacy, mathematics and positive behavior. It is also accessible to students who may have limitations that prevent them from participating in instrumental music.
4. Unit 5 has done an excellent job investing in music education. We believe all Unit 5 students should have the option of participating in choir and/or instrumental if they so choose.

Ridiculous to cut this! 6th grade is hard enough without taking away their activities.

Give the kids a chance to express themselves. music helps keep them focused in their other classes too.

Music is just as important as math. cutting this is a huge mistake for the kids development.
