We the People of the State of South Carolina hereby petition advertisers of The State Newspaper owned by The McLatchey Company to consider the plight of the silent majority of South Carolinians. There is a growing sentiment among USC alumni, fans and students that the adversarial relationship The State Newspaper has adopted with The University of South Carolina for four decades must change course to serve the citizens of the state. The vast majority of advertisers are upstanding and reputable companies that are leaders in their industry, and we\'ve done business with you despite your relationship with The State Newspaper. Henceforth, we\'ll be doing business with your competion until you stop advertising, or until pressure is brought to bear that will result the kind of relationship a flagship university deserves from it\'s hometown newspaper. Gamecock nation neither seeks nor desires preferential treatment. We merely ask that newspaper to adhere to the highest standards of journalistic integrity. Their readership wants The State to report the news, not create the news. We want facts, not sensationalism. If Stephen Garcia keys a car or drinks a beer at the same time that allegations surface about another state university\'s misapropriation of millions of dollars, or their coaches stealing $27,000 without reprisal, or their star linebacker\'s ever-looming DUI trial, or their recruit\'s photo with $20,000, or the SLED investigation into the Clemson PD...Perhaps a little perspective may be in order in the reporting of such.
