Say No to 24-hour Drive-through in Temescal
Temescal as a 24-hour drive-through zone? A group of residents filed an appeal on December 13, which will be heard by the City Council or sent back to the Planning Commission for community input. For information about the appeal, see “Living in the O” entries on December 9 and December 12: http://oaklandliving.wordpress.com/2010/12/09/keep-temescal-pedestrian-friendly-help-appeal-the-auto-centric-mcdonalds-redesign/ Temescal is not, and does not want to be, a 24-hour drive-through zone. As such, we the undersigned: – Are appalled that the restaurant has been allowed to operate a 24-hour drive-through for years, in blatant and deliberate violation of its conditional use permit.
That’s what Temescal will get unless residents support a neighborhood appeal of the Oakland Planning Commission’s decision of December 1 to allow McDonald’s to operate a 24-hour drive-through at 45th and Telegraph. This decision was made without due deliberation or input from local residents, and despite the fact that this McDonald’s has already been operating a 24-hour drive-through for years, in violation of its existing use permit. In addition, the approval includes a new design that dramatically increases the capacity and visibility of the existing drive-through lane.
Temescal is first and foremost a neighborhood, and one that has seen miraculous development in the past few years despite tough economic times. Drive-through business, particularly late-night, not only produces immediate negative impacts on the local community (trash, traffic, noise), but also actively undermines the potential for further pedestrian and resident-friendly development.
– Strongly oppose the permitting of 24-hour drive-through for the McDonalds located at 45th Street and Telegraph Avenue.
