Dear Mayor Cushman and Ilion Village Board: We, the undersigned past and present residents and employees and supporters of Ilion, NY, have long suspected that the citizens of Ilion suffer higher than normal rates of cancer, autoimmune diseases, reproductive problems and other health complaints. We are concerned that suspected contamination from decades of heavy industry may have contributed to these high rates of illness. We ask that our elected village officials proceed with the following steps: 1. Identify potential past industrial dump sites located under and around the Remington School, behind the former Towpath (Whiffletree) Inn, on and around the high school "towpath" and other suspected sites. 2. Contact the DEC, Department of Health and EPA with our concerns and demand appropriate state and federal action including testing of soil, air and groundwater. The Ilion Project will provide contact names, numbers and addresses. 4. Follow up with above agencies until they act upon our requests and maintain regular communication with your constituents via our task force. 5. Take action to investigate and, if necessary, clean up the potential human health hazards on and around the (former) Duofold property. The people of Ilion are entitled to live work and raise children in a safe, clean, healthy environment. We, the undersigned, deserve no less and will work to ensure our community is safe from potential past and present industrial exposures.
