Thermodynamics I - Final Exam Issues
Firstly, many students, found the exam significantly more challenging than anticipated. The practice exams provided did not appear to align closely with the types or difficulty levels of the questions presented on the final. Furthermore, the provided formula sheet for the final exam was insufficient, therefore it impacted the performance of the majority of the class during the final. This discrepancy left many of us feeling unprepared despite diligent study efforts.
Additionally, there was confusion regarding the scope of the exam. While the syllabus and Dr. Abidin's announcement on Canvas dated December 8th stated that the exam would be comprehensive, some students recall a mention in Dr. Abidin's last class suggesting it would only cover the final chapters. Unfortunately, this ambiguity meant that many of us prepared under different assumptions, which likely impacted our performance.
Another challenge was the delay in receiving grades for the most recent homework assignments. Without feedback on these assignments, it was difficult to evaluate our understanding of key concepts and identify areas needing additional review before the exam.
Time management also posed a significant issue during the test. Even those confident in their understanding found the time constraints prohibitive, making it difficult to fully demonstrate our knowledge.
Given these factors, many students who were previously in good academic standing now feel their overall performance in the course is at risk.
Through the issuance of this petition, we respectfully request consideration of potential remedies, such as:
- Applying an appropriate curve (above 30points added) to the final exam grades.
- Dropping the lowest test grade, as is a common policy in other courses.
- Applying the grade scale from Dr. Finol's previous syllabus which allows the C- grade of 65.
- Make the final exam grade optional, as offered in previous semesters.
We believe that such measures would help ensure a fairer reflection of students' understanding and efforts throughout the semester.
