Thrive Advocates for Behavioral Health is a parent-led grassroots movement that aims to improve the identification, treatment, and reimbursement of mental health and substance use disorder services for young people aged 25 and younger.

We urge policy makers, medical professionals, educators, and first responders to address the following topics:

  • Eliminate the stigma associated with mental health and substance use disorder.
    • Ensure young people in Missouri have access to high quality substance use and mental health services
      • require better coverage for out-of-network providers
      • remove needlessly high standards for medical necessity
  • Increase the number of providers that serve young people below age 25
  • Thoroughly review standards of care at mental health and substance use treatment centers in Missouri and compare to centers of excellence throughout the country. If a high quality of care is not accessible, work to attract more providers.
  • Require insurance companies to pay for effective therapies such as Dialectic Behavior Therapy
  • Improve behavioral health crisis care by following the National Guidelines for Behavioral Health Crisis Care (https://www.samhsa.gov/sites/default/files/national-guidelines-for-behavioral-health-crisis-care-02242020.pdf)
  • Get first responders trained so they are equipped to help young people with mental health and substance use disorders (including school officers and college campus police)
  • Support programs that will lead to:
    • Early identification of behavioral health disorders from grade school through college
    • Education on healthy self-care for students from grade school to college
    • Educator training on behavioral health disorders from grade school to college
    • Screening for behavioral health disorders from grade school to college

My son has been struggling for years and the insurance companies just make it impossible to get any real help. this needs to change now.
