Petition requesting that government commit to paving the entite TLH by 2017
For the past six years the province of NL have been experiencing unprecedented prosperity. A prosperity fueled by revenue from offshore oil. Economist and government officals agree that spending based on this prosperity is not sustainable in the long term. Work on the TLH started in the early 1980's. Today you can drive the entire 1125 km from Lab. City to L'Anse-Au-Clair. Unfortunately only 250 km of the road surface between Lab. City and HV-GB is paved. There is a further 80 km of pavement between Red Bay and L'Anse-Au-Clair. The remainder of the road is gravel that offers the traveler potholes, blinding dust, exposed bedrock, ruts and loose pebbles. Paving the entire TLH would have economic benefits to the residents of Labrador. It would reduce the cost of travel between communties in Labrador. A saving to the traveling public but also to the cost of shipping goods and therefore the cost of living in these communities. A paved road would attract many more tourists to Labrador and provide a further economic boost to these communities. Perhaps most importantly paving of the entire TLH would increase the safety of the traveling public. We the undersigned would like the Government of NL to commit to the paving of the entire TLH by 2017. This is a 6 year time frame to coincide with the period before oil revenues start to plunge.
