The indictment of Texas Governor Rick Perry for doing nothing more than exercising his unlimited veto power to check the actions of a drunken and disgraced Travis County District Attorney is just the latest in a long line of politically-motivated inquisitions initiated in Travis County with the express purpose of targeting Republican officeholders. It is time for the abuse to end. Texas has no initiative and referendum, but Texans can still let their legislators know that it is time to put an end to this taxpayer-funded abuse of prosecutorial power by supporting this proposed Constitutional amendment; to wit:
"Whereas,
the Travis County District Attorney’s office has repeatedly
engaged in baseless and politically-motivated prosecutions of state and
federal officials, and has pursued this pattern of partisan,
prosecutorial abuse with the clear purpose of overturning democratic
elections; and whereas it continues to do so even though
it has been unable to gain a single permanent conviction while wasting
tens of thousands of taxpayers’ dollars and bringing disrepute to the
State of Texas;
Be it hereby resolved
that the Travis County District Attorney’s Office be stripped of its
power to prosecute any
and all elected and appointed officials of this state, and be it further
resolved that all of Travis County’s power to conduct investigations
and prosecutions of any and all public officials, either appointed or
elected,
be transferred in total to the Office of the Attorney General of the State of Texas."
