Petition to Save the International Center at UCSD
We, the students, faculty, and staff of the University of California, San Diego believe the International Center is a valuable part of our community. It is a place foreign and domestic students are welcomed to exchange ideas and culture; a physical space that celebrates and manifests the diversity of UCSD's population.
As it stands, there are no confirmed plans to re-build or re-constitute the Center as a unit, following the planned demolition of the UCSD International Center on July 8, 2016.
We ask that the demolition of the center be delayed until a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and/or Memorandum of Agreement (MOU) between UCSD administration, faculty, students, and staff has been agreed upon.
We demand that the subject of the proposed MOU and/or MOA be centered on plans for the re-building or reconstitution of the International Center as a cohesive unit, similar to its current function.
Although the respective offices housed in the International Center were relocated to separate places on campus, we believe that the true strength and value of the units rests in their ability to collaborate and gather in a common space that fosters learning and cultural exchange among the members of the UC San Diego community.
We, the community of UC San Diego, demand that the demolition of the International Center be delayed until the UCSD administration presents and agrees upon plans centered on the relocation/renovation/reconstitution of the International Center as a cohesive unit.
