PETITION

TO: Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department; Michael DiBerardinis, Deputy Mayor for Environmental and Community Resources; Friends of Clark Park; Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell:
I, the undersigned, think Uhuru Flea Markets are highly beneficial for our community and I support continuing monthly markets in Clark Park from April to October in 2013 and beyond. In this economic downturn where at least 40% of Philadelphians live in poverty, the Uhuru Flea Markets play an important role in creating economic opportunities for many small local businesses, and in opening up a resource base for under-served families and independent artists. I appreciate that 100% of the profits from the running of this market support the non-profit African People’s Education & Defense Fund's grassroots, black community-led self-reliance programs promoting health, education and economic development. The markets promote a positive cultural life in West Philadelphia and provide a unique and festive venue for all members of the community to meet, support local vendors and enjoy our community park.

We urge Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Department to continue to permit Uhuru Flea Markets at an affordable and reasonable rate appropriate for these small, community-based events which create economic development for the community & urgently needed income for people who may not be able to find work in this economic downturn.
