Dear WIAA Representative Assembly Member:
High school lacrosse is an opportunity for schools and the WIAA.
High school lacrosse, which has a four-decade history of organized play in our state, is capturing the attention of students in high schools throughout Washington state.
Today, over 4,000 student-athletes from 200 WIAA-member schools make up prep teams in Eastern and Western Washington placing lacrosse well within the viable mix of WIAA sports. And across the US, state activities associations like the WIAA now officially recognize lacrosse in nearly half of all states.
As a viable NCAA and High School sport, lacrosse:
· IS A PARTICIPATION OPPORTUNITY FOR NEW STUDENT-ATHLETES
· IS A PATH TO HIGHER EDUCATION
· IS SELF-FUNDED
· ALREADY SUCCESSFULLY SCHEDULES GAMES & PRACTICES
· ALREADY FOLLOWS WIAA GUIDELINES
· WILL INCREASE WIAA PARTICIPATION NUMBERS
There is little risk in sanctioning lacrosse, as it captures students’ attention on campus, is and will continue to be self-funded, gives schools greater control over a sport already in schools, and should you vote to sanction lacrosse, DOES NOT require your district or school to take on the sport. Sanctioning lacrosse only acknowledges that girls and boys have a school participation opportunity and can play for a Washington state championship.
Please embrace your role as an educator and athletics leader and support the sanctioning of lacrosse by the WIAA as a high school sport in Washington state.
