Perhaps you recently received a letter from the city indicating that there is a proposed zoning change in our neighborhood but were confused as to where 9301 South Wights Fort Rd. is located or didn't recognize the street name and assumed it was not near your neighborhood. What if the address was written as 9301 South 3400 West? Would you know more readily that this location is what has always been thought of as a future public park and open space area on the south east property of the SLCC Jordan campus?. Now its being proposed to be a multifamily senior restricted community.
As per the notice:
The land use is proposed to be amended from Public (Public Use) to MD (Medium Density Residential) and zoning changed from R-1.8 (single-family residential, up to 1.8lots per acre) and A-5 (Agricultural, minimum 5 acre lot) to R-M-5-PD Zone (Residential Multiple, 5 lots per acre, Planned Development)
According to the South Jordan City website the area to be rezoned if approved will become "Leisure Villas Senior Community. 168 clustered homes and clubhouse"
Public hearings regarding this proposal will be held before the South Jordan City Planning Commission at 6:30p.m., Tuesday, February 26, 2019, and before the South Jordan City Council at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at the South Jordan City Offices, 1600 West Towne Center Drive. All interested parties are invited to attend.
If you're still confused and want to know more about what this looks like in the area please take a moment to study the image above. This is looking in an easterly direction at the open property located directly south of SLCC. It is a 40 acre parcel of land and the proposed development of 168 clustered homes has been superimposed over the current field.
Typically I don't get involved with issues like this but I am feeling uncomfortable with the proposal and would like to draw upon the community for opinions of how this property might better serve our neighborhood. At the very least I would like to see the developer abandon the planned 20 homes adjacent to 3400 west and provide a public park with amenities found in so many other local community parks in our area for the use of our local residents.
If you agree with my opinion then most importantly I would invite you to attend the planning and city council meetings noted above... Additionally if you support the position that this area should not be rezoned as I do then please sign this petition and join me in letting the city know that they need to find a different location for this project.

The feedback I have received clarifies that many of us assumed this land was permanently set aside for community use. I am currently reviewing the city zoning documents to better understand how this transition from public space to private development was initiated.

Seeing this steady momentum confirms that many of us still value the green space our neighborhood was promised. It is encouraging to realize how many neighbors are paying close attention to the way our local land is being used.

The lack of green space in So Jordan is of serious concern. Our area especially is lacking a place where families and individuals can take a break from traffic and construction . Please do not rezone this 40 acres, and develop the promised park .
There are three major concerns with this project: 1) the added traffic to 3400 South and other residential streets such as Star Fire and Iron Gate Rd, 2) this contradicts the original plan for open spaces and park areas, 3) the potential devaluation of homes in the surrounding area.
The increased traffic on 3400 W and other neighborhood roads would be a hazard for our children and youth who walk to and from Elk Meadows, Elk Ridge, and the bus stop for Bingham. The traffic by Elk Meadows Elementary during drop-off and pick-up times is bad enough already.
There are already two senior living/Alzheimer’s care facilities nearby. One across from Costco on 104th & Bangerter and the other on 9800 South and approximately 2200 West. It needs to be a green or park area as promised. There aren’t any in this segment of the city.
This has always been a field growing up. We would actually go play when the owner said it was okay. There's already so much density housing in South Jordan, let's make this a park for the people! Plus, who wants to live with the freeway right behind their house?
I heard creon this lawyer. He has questions, can anyone answer these? Bob, Regarding the development we spoke about this morning, what do you see as the main bases for stopping the development? Are you aware of any procedure that the developer and/or the city should have followed but failed to follow? Are you aware of any substantive legal requirements that are not met by the proposed development and the inadequate roads? This is really shady and dishonest. And the due diligence notifying us in the neighborhood was pathetic. This was supposed to be a park. The streets can't handle the traffic from such a development. The road is bad enough as it is for kids crossing to the elementary school.
