Title: Petition to Prohibit Wake Boats and Personal Watercraft on Lake Guntersville

To: Commissioner of Conservation N.Gunter Guy, JR.

Alabama Department of Conservation

Conservation Advisory Board

Senator Steve Livingston

Representative Tommy Hanes

We, the undersigned, concerned residents and visitors of Lake Guntersville, hereby express our strong opposition to the operation of wake boats and personal watercraft (PWC) on the lake. As the popularity of these watercraft has surged in recent years, so have the negative impacts on the lake's ecosystem, safety, and overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike. We urge a call to action for the environmental impacts these high speed, maximum disturbance vessels are contributing to our shorelines.

Environmental Impact:

Wake boats, known for creating massive wakes, can cause severe shoreline erosion and damage aquatic habitats, leading to the loss of valuable wildlife and plant species. The increased noise and exhaust emissions from wake boats and PWC also contribute to water pollution, thereby harming the delicate balance of the lake's ecosystem.

Public Safety Concerns:

The high-speed maneuvers of personal watercraft and wake boats pose significant safety risks to other boaters, swimmers, and wildlife. These vessels often operate close to shorelines and swimming areas, increasing the chances of accidents and collisions. We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy the lake without fear of injury or harm.

Noise Pollution:

Wake boats and PWC are known for their loud engine noises, which can disturb the tranquility of the lake and disrupt the peaceful enjoyment of residents and visitors alike. The excessive noise from these watercraft can also negatively impact the health and well-being of wildlife living in and around the lake.

Damage to Dock Structures:

The large wakes generated by wake boats can cause damage to private and public dock structures, leading to costly repairs for lakefront property owners and authorities.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that immediate action be taken to address these issues and protect the pristine environment and quality of life of Lake Guntersville. We propose the following measures:

Enforce Speed Limits: Implement and strictly enforce speed limits for all watercraft on the lake, especially in designated no-wake zones and close to shorelines.

Ban Wake Boats and PWC: Prohibit the operation of wake boats and personal watercraft on Lake Guntersville to prevent further environmental degradation and safety risks.

Promote Education and Awareness: Launch educational campaigns to raise awareness about the ecological and safety concerns associated with wake boats and PWC, encouraging responsible boating practices.

Strengthen Watercraft Regulations: Review and update existing watercraft regulations to ensure they align with the changing dynamics of recreational boating and prioritize environmental conservation.

By signing this petition, we join together in urging you to take the necessary steps to protect Lake Guntersville and preserve its natural beauty and recreational opportunities for generations to come.

Sincerely,

Concerned Sportsmen of Lake Guntersville.
