Zara's Fast Fashion is Destroying the Planet. Demand Sustainability Now.
Fast fashion is the mass production of cheap clothing replicating the newest micro-trends until it is replaced by the next one in a matter of days to weeks. Not only does fast fashion contribute to ~10% of the world's environmental waste, but it also includes unethical labor sourced from developing nations/third world countries where children and garment workers work up to 16 hour long shifts while making a barely liveable wage. In 2022, the global fashion industry was ranked the second most polluting industry after oil and gas, producing 1.2 billion tons of greenhouse gas emissions every year (Maiti, 2024). In today’s sphere where climate change and global warming are becoming increasingly a concern for our planet’s habitability for future generations, this is a huge point of concern. While fashion is a staple in our culture and extremely important for self-expression, we need to hold companies accountable for their lack of sustainability.
One of the biggest corporations that contribute to fast fashion is Zara. Despite Zara's efforts to be environmentally conscious, their attempts have been ineffective and only exist as a form of greenwashing - a form of advertising/marketing that is done to disillusion the public into believing that they are an environmentally friendly company. It is clear that Zara's priorities lie in profit and encouraging mass consumption rather than being environmentally sustainable.
This petition is being made to urge Zara to reduce the amount of plastic they use by 25% in the next 5 years. No policies have been made regarding Zara's carbon emissions or the usage of sustainable raw materials. By signing this petition, we are placing pressure on Zara's sustainability department to change this.
Fast fashion contributes significantly to plastic pollution, damaging the environment, human health, ecosystems, marine life, etc. Zara, as well as many other fast fashion companies, use synthetic fibers such as polyester to create fabric. When their clothing is dumped into landfills to decompose (typically after a few wears), harmful chemicals and plastic microfibers are released into the air, soil, and water. when they decompose in landfills, typically only after a few wears. As ethical shoppers, we must use our power to persuade and put pressure on companies such as Zara to implement more environmentally conscious strategies. By signing this petition, you are giving your support to a worldwide campaign asking Zara to confront its plastic impact and make significant changes. By working together, we can make Zara accountable and open the door for a more sustainable future for the fashion industry.
